Others speculate that it is his innocence, purity, and kindness which draws Ash, who is shrouded with self-loathing and shame, to him. Some viewers understandably criticises his disposition as largely naive and gullible, as his first interaction with Ash is to ask whether the gun in Ash's hand is a real one. Eiji knows little to nothing about the brutality of gang life, so to enter it jarringly shocks him.
One of these few selected is Okumura Eiji: a nineteen-year-old assistant photographer with a soft soul and a kind heart. He might not appear shaken or affected by the outrageous things done to him, but he is exceedingly selective of who is part of his inner circle and who can touch him (non-sexually in this context). The main character, Ash Lynx, is a seventeen-year-old former gang leader and, though it does not define his core identity, is a victim of abuse, rape, and child sex trafficking at the hands of Dino Golzine, who kidnapped him for his unusually high IQ in hopes that he will later inherit the leadership of the mafia. *We must remember this victim for he will be an important figure to the main character of the story. Which is why the affected soldier * in the squad sees his comrades as objects of his fear and, gripping his gun shakily, shoots them, either killing or severely injuring them. The war proves to be a significant aspect of the setting due to how the main antagonist Dino Golzine's notorious mafia wants to gain control of the minds of the soldiers posted in those regions, inciting irrational fear and needless violence that keeps one begging for more lest their mind succumbs to an all-consuming madness. Its effects of grasping the user in a spiralling desire to die and/or to eliminate objects programmed by memory causing them pain, including themselves, pays homage to the term that was first coined by J.D.

This played a large part in how the series starts with a squad of soldiers sabotaged by a drug which comes to be named banana fish. Unlike the manga, the anime is set further in time, in modern New York, and from post Vietnam war to the Iran war. I watched the anime adaptation of this cult manga series created by Akimi Yoshida in the 1980s running up to 1994 with a special epilogue chapter called ' Garden of Light'. Before we begin, I want to talk about the exposition of ' Banana Fish'. The subtle details I have always appreciated in Studio Ghibli films were also explored in the fragile dynamics that scaffolded this series. Its perception that love and intimacy extend beyond tangibility, left an impact on how I viewed connections and bonds shared between characters in anime as well as between people. But it is more than that: under the gritty action and brutalities of criminal and gang life, is love. It conveys everything clear-cut in brutal honesty and doesn't sugarcoat the brutal topics brought up. However, it does not sensationalise or romanticise the violence and toxicity of the relationships between the characters. At first glance, ' Banana Fish' is, and does live up to the opinion of being a meticulous drama that depicts the effects of criminal and gang life as well as child abuse. And trauma does not mean you are unsalvageable. A good reminder is that asexuality is not monolith it is very diverse and unique to one's own definitions.
